The story takes place at the end of the Southern and Northern Dynasties. The daughter of Chen Guo's Grand Tutor is forced to marry the puppet emperor of Zhou, Yuwen Yong, because of a political marriage. The powerful official Dugu Jin has long controlled the government, planning to depose Yuwen Yong and support his legitimate son Dugu Cheng to succeed him. However, Dugu Cheng has an emotional bond with Tang Wan, a spy loyal to the emperor. The series shows the protagonist's difficult choice between family interests and personal emotions through court intrigues, spy battles and triangular emotional relationships.
